Inflation is the highest it’s been in decades, which impacts our entire Michigan business community. But while costs on nearly everything else seem to be rising, Consumers Energy is here to help businesses reduce energy waste, lower energy costs and even cash in on rebates that can be invested back into your bottom-line.
How? By partnering with businesses to help them use their energy as a strategic resource and honing in on two key management strategies – energy efficiency and demand response.
So, what exactly is energy efficiency? In simple terms, it’s using less to accomplish the same task – and it can save businesses a lot of money. In fact, according to Energy.gov, Michigan businesses are using on average up to 30% more energy than they need. That’s a big opportunity to save – and many businesses have already started. In fact, since 2009, Consumers Energy business customers have saved $2.5 billion. Let’s look at two:
- Auto-Cast, an automotive company based in Grandville, worked with Consumers Energy to become more efficient by installing compressed air nozzles – provided free of charge. Their project helped them save money, lessen air pollution, improve the work environment and reduce maintenance needed on machines. And the best part? They realized an estimated savings of $117,270 on their annual energy costs.
- McLaren Health Care in Grand Blanc made the switch to LED lighting and installed automated lighting controls to lower operational costs and shrink their carbon footprint. In doing so, the company received a cash rebate of $230,106 – and they were able to save an estimated annual energy cost of $1.6 million.
As you can see, energy efficiency can really pay off. But it’s not the only way to manage energy as a strategic resource.
With the Demand Response program, Michigan businesses can get rewarded for smart energy use. How? By working with an Energy Solutions Manager to create an energy management plan that works for your business. If there is ever a day where the demand on Michigan’s energy grid is extremely high, we’ll call on you to activate your plan. By shifting your energy use during the defined event time, you will help keep clean energy sources reliable for Michigan and your community. And the best part? Consumers Energy will pay you for just agreeing to participate in the Demand Response program- even if an event day is not called during your program year.
