New Holland Brewing Co. President and co-founder Brett Vanderkamp said he’s started to think about succession planning at the 20-year-old, closely-held craft brewery and distillery. While acknowledging that the independent beverage producer is keeping its options open, Vanderkamp said New Holland has started “laying the groundwork” for the next stage of its history, which could lead to a sale, a transition to a new generation or employee ownership.

Store shelves have become a colorful menagerie of six-pack cartons as an increasing number of craft beer producers target Michigan consumers. As the competition for that limited shelf real estate heats up, some of the state’s craft breweries say they’re feeling pressure from the well-capitalized multinational breweries as well as from small local producers. In particular, off-premise retailers continue to stock more local beers to meet the buying habits of younger consumers and to connect their stores to their surrounding communities.

If ever there was a sign that the craft beer business has matured, it’s that the money has finally showed up and taken an interest in the industry.

Keith Klopcic says the deal he struck with Oskar Blues Brewery and Fireman Capital to buy Perrin Brewing Co. in Comstock Park has worked well, particularly because it’s allowed him to continue scaling up the business. Perrin’s beers, including new session IPA No Problems, are now available in cans across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and the brewery continues to ramp up its bottled specialty releases, such as the prized No Rules Vietnamese Porter, which is aging in the bourbon barrels behind Klopcic ahead of a March release date.

Michigan’s craft beverage industry could prove attractive for acquisitions

Despite a long career in the beer distribution business, Keith Klopcic lacked expertise in making the beverages he sold to bars and retailers around the state of Michigan. So when the opportunity arose to buy Comstock Park-based Perrin Brewing Co. last year, he tapped a partner with extensive craft brewing resources who had the know-how to help him continue scaling up the business.
