HOLLAND — JR Automation Technologies LLC is now part of Tokyo-based Hitachi Ltd. after the completion of a $1.42 billion deal for the West Michigan-based custom automation systems provider. 

Japanese conglomerate Hitachi Ltd. plans to acquire Holland-based JR Automation Technologies LLC in a $1.42 billion deal.

Robotics and additive manufacturing markets have entered into a new phase of growth, ripened by an era in which maintaining the status quo is no longer viable for manufacturers who struggle to secure quality labor. That’s because robotic systems are enabling manufacturers to deliver higher quality parts and maximize throughput, said Mark Ermatinger, vice president of sales at Zeeland-based Industrial Control Service Inc., who does not see the “rise” of robots stopping anytime soon.

Before Landscape Forms Inc. acquired Kornegay Design last year, the Kalamazoo-based designer and manufacturer of site furniture, accessories and lighting mulled several acquisition targets that shared its design culture and core beliefs.

• M&A: Holland-based JR Automation Technologies LLC, a private equity-backed manufacturer of custom automation equipment, has acquired Setpoint Systems and Setpoint Inc. of Ogden, Utah. The deal further expands JR Automation’s industrial automation offerings for global clients, according to a statement. The acquired companies specialize in automation solutions and motion control systems for the e-commerce and amusement industries. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Michigan’s role in improving manufacturing efficiency has come a long way since the invention of the assembly line.

• M&A: Holland-based Lakewood Fab Tech LLC was acquired by Pewaukee, Wis.-based Venturedyne Ltd., the holding company for Holland-based Thermotron Industries, a manufacturer of environmental test chambers and vibration test systems. Thermotron was Lakewood’s primary customer, supplying the firm with various stainless steel components for its test chambers. The companies also are located across the street from each other. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

HOLLAND — A West Michigan startup hopes to drive down costs and increase consumer safety for electric vehicles with new technology it plans to bring to market next year.

• M&A: Belding-based Robroy Enclosures Inc., a subsidiary of Robroy Industries Inc. of Verona, Pa., acquired the assets of Texas-based Attabox Industrial Enclosures, according to a statement. The deal complements Robroy Enclosures’ existing Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures brand of fiberglass electrical enclosures. Attabox makes engineered enclosures for the industrial, solar, electrical, telecommunications, HVAC, instrumentation/control, government, oil and gas, and construction markets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. 

RICHLAND — As manufacturers turn to automation and robotics to speed production and increase efficiencies, one soon-to-be graduate of Western Michigan University aims to bring that technology to machine shops. 

Not that it’s ever easy, but business owners have a greater array of options than ever when seeking financing for their companies. From private investor capital to bank debt, businesses with a good track record should have the ability to secure what they need, according to local finance professionals.
