Look around at some of the structures in West Michigan and it comes as no shock that the region is home to some amazingly talented architects and designers. Again this year, the Grand Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects honors the best of the best work from local architects, designs that both solve problems for clients and stand above the competition. This year’s annual gala awards were held Saturday, Sept. 25 at 38 Commerce in downtown Grand Rapids.

Project awards were judged by Hugh Newell Jacobsen FAIA, a legendary architect and native of Grand Rapids; his son, Simon Jacobsen, Associate AIA, a partner at his father’s firm; and Bob Gurney, a friend of the Jacobsens and a respected Washington, D.C.-based architect.

MiBiz was pleased to again serve as media sponsor of the awards. In our coverage this year and corresponding to the launch of our new MiDesign section on MiBiz.com, we’re putting a special emphasis on how design thinking played a role in the projects. For each building award, we’ve asked the architect to share what went into the design and what sets the project apart. Congratulations to the winners!
