MiBiz: What was your design challenge from the client going into this project?

Vyn: The Peckham corporate culture is one of inclusion and the challenge that they gave was to create a building whose design and construction would reflect the values of human dignity and respect – enabling the occupants to feel uplifted, welcomed, respected, empowered and safe. The building would also reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of Peckham’s global workforce, and promote high performance and teamwork while balancing creativity and innovation with efficiency and security. LEED certification and the application of Universal Design principles to exceed ADA standards were mandated as well. 

MiBiz: How did the project incorporate the client’s needs as well as your own creative problem solving?

Vyn: We began by meeting with the Peckham leadership group to better quantify their wants and needs. Those meetings quickly grew to include clients, neighbors, community representatives and vendors. Following the principles of Universal Design, we created a building that was devoid of cultural bias and was 100 percent accessible to all people, no matter their ability. We used the LEED process to measure our sustainable efforts.

MiBiz: What about the project or the design are you most proud of? What sets it apart?

Vyn: We are most proud of the success that Peckham has achieved since moving into the facility. That success is measured in direct benefits to their bottom line, increases in worker retention and in recognition from their peers and the larger community – including being named Michigan Manufacturer of the Year.
A major, driving force in the design was to utilize the built environment to promote social equity through access to natural light. A light well positioned in the middle of the building stretches from the production floor to the collaboration spaces and into the leadership area. Besides erasing the wall between blue and white collar, the light well achieves another goal of creating cool space that fosters spontaneous interactions and sparks big ideas.
