MiBiz: What was your design challenge from the client going into this project?

Corby: The goal for the renovation of this 1980s office was to create a fresh, contemporary space that would support and foster collaboration and innovation by bringing people together in formal meeting spaces and informal gathering places.

MiBiz: How did the project incorporate the client’s needs as well as your own creative problem solving?

Corby: The GFT global headquarters support serious business…playfully. We worked within the formal symmetry of the existing structure adding color and materials to create a new environment reflective of GFT culture. The resulting office is one that was created to resonate with staff while not alienating older clientele.
We accomplished this primarily through the use of color and texture. The main palette is black and white with intentional placements of colors and materials to bring depth and interest to the space. The selection of furniture was also a critical design element as it plays a leading role in defining the way spaces are used and experienced.

MiBiz: What about the project or the design are you most proud of? What sets it apart?

Corby: The boardroom and adjacent gathering spaces are places that support interaction – comfortably yet effectively. Playful materials – metal coil drapery, acrylic with digitally applied wood grain and a honeycomb polycarbonate (back-lit) ceiling – add lively energy to the business-focused environment.
Offering food, friends and fun, the lower level café, once a basement storage room, bubbles with energy and life. Abundant light, described by employees as “Out of Star Trek,” a wall of bamboo plants and the layering of materials creates space for the serious business of relaxing. Lounge seating, private dining/meeting zones and a game room provide a range of spaces to unplug.
