Clark: The client envisioned the new Great Lakes Research Center as a world-class freshwater research facility that will support, consolidate, and enhance lab research, campus instruction, and public outreach in water-related studies. The overall design of the site and building would need to both capture the essence of a world-class facility as well as serve as a catalyst for future waterfront development along the campus shoreline.
Clark: This prominent location on the shoreline of a protected waterway connecting directly to Lake Superior allowed Michigan Technological University to be well positioned to advance research into the Great Lakes. Out of the study of the landscape, the character of the building developed. From a pragmatic standpoint, the project required intense problem solving so creative planning of the different zones of space such as the separation of public versus private space as well as the dynamic interaction of the two allowed for a highly functional and efficient layout.
Clark: …(T)he most satisfying part of the project is knowing that the finished design embodies the vibrant spirit set forth in the vision of the client group. As designers and listeners, we were successful in understanding the heart of the building and were able to expand upon the initial vision. With the building’s unique site relationship, the differing experiences of interior space from large expanses of glass to efficient research labs, and the integration of exterior space including a large green roof and plaza overlooking the Keweenaw Waterway, we are proud to have been a part of designing the campus skyline and new front door for Michigan Technological University.
