MiBiz: What was your design challenge from the client going into this project?

Davis: Hope College asked that Graves Hall be restored while accommodating their current space needs for the facility as well as meeting current health, safety, welfare and accessibility requirements.

MiBiz: How did the project incorporate the client’s needs as well as your own creative problem solving?

Davis: The main challenge was to bring the original building back while accommodating the new needs. FTC&H took the approach that we would expose and enhance the historical characteristics of Graves Hall. Concurrently, we pushed very hard to integrate and conceal modern conveying, mechanical and electrical systems. Past modifications to the original building had to be “undone” to get back to the original building floor plans and building appearance. We started working with the college on schemes that would provide as light of a touch to the original design as possible.

MiBiz: What about the project or the design are you most proud of?

Davis: With respect to the design, Hope College challenged FTC&H with two goals that were essentially in opposition to one another. They wanted the old historic icon returned to proper form, but they also wanted it to perform as a new facility would perform.
