Metz and Smart (on behalf of the committee): Bert and Ben (formerly the superintendent and COO, respectively with Grand Rapids Public Schools) set their mind to improving the public school system for students. That required many hard decisions, but the public ultimately embraced their vision and approach and passed a major bond issue. Those critical funds enabled GRPS to move into the 21st century with substantial infrastructure improvements. One significant achievement was establishing the popular Academy of Design and Construction, which stimulates student interest in architecture and design and prepares graduates with the skills necessary to work successfully in the industry.
Bert and Ben shared a common love and passion for our community and children. While at GRPS they made many tough decisions that laid the groundwork for a major improvements and positive changes to the school district. The impact of their leadership and vision can still be seen in the numerous academic opportunities our students enjoy today.
While at GRPS, David Smith shared this very same passion, vision and enthusiasm about education and our community. These two leaders are a natural choice to represent the spirit of the David D. Smith Humanitarian Award.
