Grand Rapids, Mich. (December 1, 2011) – Van Andel Institute (VAI) welcomes Dr. W. James Nelson as a new member of the VAI Graduate School (VAIGS) Board of Directors.
VAIGS prepares biomedical research scholars through a graduate program in cell and molecular genetics, with an emphasis on translation of knowledge and technology to improve human health and well-being. The six-member Board of Directors manages the affairs of the Graduate School through strategic planning, financial management, and oversight of the Dean.
Dr. Nelson is the Rudy J. and Daphne Donohue Munzer Professor in the School of Medicine and Professor of Biology at Stanford University. Dr. Nelson’s previous roles at Stanford include Chairman of the Department of Molecular & Cellular Physiology, Senior Associate Dean for Research, and Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs. Dr. Nelson serves on editorial boards for the journals Science, Trends in Cell Biology, and Molecular Biology of the Cell. Among other honors, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009.
Dr. Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree from Manchester University and a Ph.D. in radiation biology and genetics from the Chester Beatty Institute for Cancer Research, both in the UK. His postdoctoral training at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg was followed by a research fellowship at Cal Tech. His initial faculty appointment was at Fox Chase Institute for Cancer Research. He moved to Stanford in 1990.
