GRAND RAPIDS — Grand Rapids Community College has named NJCAA Hall of Fame inductee Charlie Wells as its new Athletic Director.

GRCC’s long-time AD, Doug Wabeke, decided to step down from the position effective April 30 to pursue outside interests that may include baseball administrator or coach.

Wells comes to GRCC ready to suit up and take the helm of the athletic program. In addition to being a member of the NJCAA Hall of Fame, Wells is an alumnus of Grand Rapids Junior College, a former GRJC athlete and a long-time wellness professor who will bring over 20 years of experience in coaching and athletics education to the position.

According to Tina Hoxie, GRCC’s dean of Students Affairs, Wells will step in where Wabeke left off.  “Charlie will fit naturally into our practice – and GRCC’s mission – of supporting and promoting each athlete’s academic and life success,” she said.

During Wabeke’s 16 years as Athletic Director, GRCC men’s and women’s team’s showed up in national Top 10 lists multiple times, and included four NJCAA Men’s Baseball championships and the Women’s Volleyball’s current Top 10 ranking.

Hoxie said, “No question, we will miss Doug. He helped put GRCC athletics on the local, regional and national collegiate maps.”
