GRAND RAPIDS - Integrated Architecture is pleased to announce the addition of William (Bill) H. Swanson, PE, LEED AP, BD&C. Swanson comes to IA after working as lead electrical engineer at BETA Design Group where he was the Electrical Department Head. A sustainable design expert, Swanson is featured on the LEEDuser.com website where he shares his knowledge of energy saving strategies, unraveling the complexities of LEED compliance, especially as it pertains to lighting.
While electrical engineers delight in power distribution and lighting layout, Swanson enthusiastically promotes the use of natural light and strategies that maximize available sunlight. He also believes the best electrical engineering occurs when the initial focus is on the end user and how he or she interacts with the system. “The greatest system designs don’t mean a thing if the controls are confusing and complicated,” Swanson states.
Simplicity of design is something Swanson came to appreciate as a high school student when he was employed in the maintenance department of a downtown Chicago library. “There were over 100 different types of electrical lights in the building. Keeping track of all the different light bulbs and keeping them in stock was neither cost-effective nor efficient,” Swanson explains.
Swanson graduated from Michigan Technological University in 2000 earning a BS in electrical engineering. He passed his PE exam in October of 2004 and became a LEED Accredited Professional in 2005.
“For the past decade, Integrated Architecture has specialized in creating energy efficient projects. Bill’s knowledge and experience in the design of electrical systems for complex buildings takes the mystery out of sustainable design and makes it a practical and attainable solution. We are pleased to have him on our team,” said Paul Dickinson, AIA, Integrated Architecture President.
