GRAND RAPIDS – Given the substantial increase in commercial property business, Sun Title, a title insurance agency, hired attorney Monica Downer as a member of its commercial property division.

“As former claims counsel for an underwriter and the preeminent 1031 exchange expert in the area, Monica provides a level of knowledge and expertise to assist us with commercial transactions,” said Sun Title co-owner/president Lawrence Duthler. “With three on-staff and experienced attorneys, we will continue to provide a level of service and expertise that is unmatched in our area.”

Since 1990, Downer has leveraged her legal knowledge in various aspects of the title and real estate industries including acting as claims counsel for a regional underwriter. In 1994, she formed Equity Exchange LLC, a company that specializes in assisting property owners in deferring taxable gains upon the sale of investment property. Through her leadership, she grew Equity Exchange into the area’s most trusted and recognized 1031 exchange company. “We’re delighted to have Monica come onboard,” said Tom Cronkright, co-owner/CEO of Sun Title. “She will serve as an on-staff attorney assisting in transaction coordination, title clearance, settlement statement preparation, closing and post-closing issues.”

Downer holds a juris doctorate degree from Loyola Law School and a bachelor’s degree in geography from Aquinas College. “I’m excited to be part of the Sun Title team,” said Downer. “Tom and Lawrence are seasoned attorneys and have created a dynamic organization that is client-centered and service minded. My experience as an attorney and years in the real estate industry will add additional capacity to their rapidly growing commercial property division.”
