Happy 2012. While the Mayans are predicting really bad things for this year, we’re actually pretty bullish on the economy and opportunities for growth over the next 357 days.  Maybe it’s because we’ve been listening to local executives, economists and business owners rather than consulting a 5,125-year calendar. Whatever the reason, we’re glad to be off and running with our first edition of the New Year.

Ron Kitchens

One of the most gratifying things I do this time of year is to say “thank you.”

I don’t mean just saying thank you to the kind person who just held the door open for me as the snow whipped in my face or to the person who drove 20 miles out of their way to return my iPad that I accidentally left on my seat on a recent plane trip. Those are regular, everyday “thank-yous” that we all should be making without hesitation.

Or I could poke fun at the PR spin about the chain’s network of newsrooms, print facilities and digital assets being the country’s “finest” — a statement made in an online video posted as the company started handing out pink slips to journalists, pressmen and delivery people.

Dean WhittakerWith globalization has come the ability to source work anywhere in the world. The economic thought was that as the world economy grew, the demand for our goods and services would grow too, and we would all prosper. As we now know, things haven’t quite worked out that way.

The other day, suitably fitted with required jacket and necktie, I made my way to the Detroit Athletic Club for the 95th annual meeting of one of the best-respected — and least-known — institutions in our state: the Citizens Research Council of Michigan.
