This year’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) heralded the unveiling of more than 40 new cars and trucks from participating automakers.

One of the clear messages coming from the proceedings at this year’s show is that the midsize and compact car segments are where the battle for consumers’ hearts (and pocketbooks) is rooted.

Speaking of action, it is beginning to look like federal leaders should actively turn their solution-searching eyes toward Michigan, where a notable economic turnaround is underway and gaining traction, sparked in large part because of our simmering manufacturing renaissance.

Ron Kitchens

One of the most gratifying things I do this time of year is to say “thank you.”

I don’t mean just saying thank you to the kind person who just held the door open for me as the snow whipped in my face or to the person who drove 20 miles out of their way to return my iPad that I accidentally left on my seat on a recent plane trip. Those are regular, everyday “thank-yous” that we all should be making without hesitation.

Please bear with me, but I feel a pent-up rant coming on and simply cannot suppress it any longer.

Let’s begin with the so-called Super Committee. This archetypal Washington, D.C. brainchild was charged with the most widely anticipated Don Quixote-like mission of the new century: agreeing on a bipartisan recommendation to trim $1.5 trillion (a mere $150 billion per year) of debt over the next decade.
