Growing up in West Michigan, Lisa Locke absorbed her passion for nature from her parents, both strong environmentalists. But she became an even stronger advocate for sustainability after picking up experience in social justice issues and business after experiences at local organizations. While the environment got her interested in sustainability, she said it’s with the social responsibility leg of the triple bottom line where the most work and some of the greatest impact can be made. “People need to believe they can have an impact, and businesses can have an impact with their people. It all starts with a consciousness. In West Michigan, we have the community to reinforce us.” Moreover, she’s proud to see the passions again carried down to her daughter, Hannah Hill, who just graduated university with an environmental science and business background. “It’s very reinforcing to see the next generation, who will have the most impact in saving us from ourselves. It shows how key education is and leads to a depth of understanding that everything is interconnected and dependent.”
