John Nash, founder of the North Ottawa County Sustainability Coalition
and Spring Lake Township Supervisor
Location: Spring Lake Township Offices

As a veteran teacher, John Nash knows the power of knowledge. Taking a cue from what he saw going on in Grand Rapids with sustainability, he wanted to bring that same kind of effort to his lakeshore community. Thus was born the North Ottawa County Sustainability Coalition. “We all learn from doing. It’s nice to have a book and read about sustainability, but it’s more effective if you do it and prove it works. We need to educate people about the potential for sustainability and we need to recognize the good that’s been done.” He came at sustainability from the environmental leg of the triple bottom line, but has learned time and time again how important people and businesses are in driving success. “Sustainability makes so much sense. The more I find out about it, the more excited I get. Everyone I take the time to explain it to gets excited. And I’m impressed that business has taken such an aggressive leadership role. Maybe it’s just West Michigan, but the businesses are not only doing things, but they’re leading the way.”
