While MiBiz has long had a presence in Kalamazoo and other parts of Southwest Michigan, the business publication earlier this year embarked on an effort to further connect with the leaders in those communities.

In May, MiBiz held the first gathering of its newly formed Southwest Michigan advisory group, which pulled in leaders in business and government for high-level discussions about the business environment in the region.

In striving for continuous improvement of our coverage of Southwest Michigan, Managing Editor Joe Boomgaard said the publication wanted to strengthen its ties with the businesses and organizations in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek region. The goal with the advisory group, he said, is to gauge the publication’s impact in the region and strategize for its approach in delivering the content business leaders want to read.

Staff Writer Nathan Peck has led MiBiz’s team coverage of business news in the Southwest Michigan region since joining the publication in 2010.

“Our editorial team is hungry for feedback and seeks open discussion about our coverage of the region and how we can better serve the needs of the business community,” Boomgaard said. “We feel we cannot improve upon that which we do not measure, and these sessions will be invaluable to us as we work to further improve our coverage in this region.”

In a ranging discussion, the group discussed news delivery methods, what topics are important to local leaders, how the region fits with the broader West Michigan region, and where participants see opportunities to focus coverage in the upcoming year.
