WEST MICHIGAN — Two local public manufacturing companies have been named to the 2011/2012 Dow Jones Sustainability Index: Herman Miller Inc. for the eighth consecutive year and Whirlpool Corporation for the seventh year in a row.
The DJSI, launched in 1999, tracks the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The index is intended to provide asset managers with reliable and objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios.
“Our goal has always been to provide innovative solutions to every customer while remaining committed to social responsibility,” stated Jeff M. Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool, the Benton Harbor-based appliance manufacturer celebrating its centennial this year. “Through the combined power of our global enterprise and outstanding employee commitment, our vision has become a reality.”
Nearly 40 years ago, Whirlpool established a corporate office for environmental control. In 2003, Whirlpool became one of the first appliance manufacturers to announce a global greenhouse gas reduction target.
Meanwhile, Herman Miller is the only contract office furniture manufacturer selected for the list.
“These awards are a testament to our employees’ great work,” Gabe Wing, director of environmental health and safety, stated in a release. “Herman Miller is committed to sustainable and responsible business practices in everything we do, whether in our local community or in the larger global footprint of our business.”
