For the second consecutive year, law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP has been ranked as the top legal advisor for banks and thrifts, as measured by number of deals through the third quarter of 2011, according to SNL Financial.
In the past 12 months, Honigman has represented banks in 17 states.
“Faced with greater regulation and the need to improve capital ratios, more banks are merging operations and selling assets to achieve financial stability,” Phillip D. Torrence, chair of the firm’s financial institutions practice group and office managing partner of the Kalamazoo office, said in a statement. “Through this process, banks are surviving and improving their bottom lines in tough times, and we are pleased to guide our clients through these deals. Like the rest of the global economy, the financial industry is in a state of flux — acquiring, consolidating, branching out, creating and entering new markets in order to keep in step with the changing needs and wishes of businesses and consumers.”
