Chairman and CEO, Van Andel Institute
Grand Rapids
Van Andel has led the Van Andel Institute since its inception in 2000 and oversaw its decade-long expansion, including the 2009 partnership with Phoenix-based Translational Genomics Research Institute and collaborations with local hospitals and Michigan State University. He’s also co-owner and chairman of the Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team.
“I happen to be especially bullish on the life sciences because this is a promising sector of Michigan’s economy flourishing from an investment in new ideas. Van Andel Institute and the industry as a whole will continue the growth that has marked the past decade. Try to remember what Grand Rapids’ Medical Mile looked like in 2001. Now, close your eyes and try to imagine what it will look like in 2021. On the road to that future, a noteworthy next step occurring in 2012 would not be surprising.”
